Road Eats: OleyTurnpike Dairy

I recently stopped in the Oley Turnpike Dairy, located south of (surprise!) Oley, Pennsylvania on (wait for it...) Oley Turnpike.  I first worked up a hunger by negotiating the twisties on PA 345 through French Creek State Park; it was early, so I had the whole park to myself. The blindingly bright low sun dappling thru the trees, making it difficult to spot potholes, gravel and deer, just added to the challenge.  The dairy started making its own ice cream back in 1970, and over the years, a diner and small petting zoo were added.  I'm not a big fan of private roadside zoos but as this one had only farm animals, and appeared very well-kept, I guess it's OK.  (Nothing like poor ol' Ricki the bear at another PA diner I've visited.) The diner was very busy, the grub decent enough, and the service was friendly if a bit harried.  As I was in the parking lot gearing up to leave, a tiny woman who had to be in her mid-80s told me how she'd motorcycled all over the country until she got "too damn old" to continue.  As I pulled away, she still had that wistful look in her eyes.

Antique Auto Museum at Hershey



The Antique Auto Museum at Hershey, in...wait for it...Hershey, Pennsylvania had been on my "ride to" list for years, so I was happy to have the opportunity to drop in a couple of weeks ago. Highly recommended! The 10-year old museum's permanent collection includes cars,  trucks, motorcycles and buses (you may recognize the Forrest Gump bus below) dating from the first automobiles in the late 1800s through the 1970s, some of which are displayed in detailed dioramas including a 1940s service station, a drive-in movie theatre and a diner. When I happened to visit, there was a special exhibit of British motorcycles from the 1950s, '60s and '70s.  Below are a few of the pics I shot (click to enlarge), heavy on motorcycles, this being a moto-blog.  To view all my images, including the four and more wheelers, click here.

Ride to Eat Report: Prospect Diner

Yesterday I stopped for a slightly hung-over breakfast at the small rail car Prospect Diner near Columbia, PA. It was my first visit but surely not the last. Highly recommended for motorcyclists. When I arrived at 0845 the joint was packed and getting busier. The parking lot is small and gravel, so bring a side stand plate. According to my diner reference book, the Prospect is a 1955 Kullman unit.

After uploading breakfast, I continued west over the historic Wrightsville Bridge, after which I headed generally south thru PA on twisty routes 624, 525 and 851, then into MD on 24 thru scenic Rocks S.P. before turning east back to DE.
